Prehistoric Kent

Prehistoric Kent
Medway Megolith
Medway Megalith

Kent has been occupied since the Lower Palaeolithic as finds from the quarries at Swanscombe attest. During the Neolithic the Medway megaliths were built and there is a rich sequence of Bronze Age occupation indicated by finds and features such as the Ringlemere gold cup.

The Megaliths are all located on the south-facing lower slopes of the North Downs. One group is concentrated between Maidstone and Rochester on the eastern side of the Medway and another between Snodland and Wrotham to the west of the river. Those on the eastern side are closely clustered and would have been intervisible when they were built.
